Dalip Singh Rana, aka The Great Khali, joins the BJP

Dalip Singh Rana, also known as The Great Khali, a professional wrestler, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The announcement of Khali’s membership in the party comes just days before the Punjab Assembly elections.

Khali arrived at the national capital’s party offices earlier in the day and completed all the formalities.

"I'm glad to have joined BJP. I feel that PM Narendra Modi's work for the nation makes him the right Prime Minister. So, I thought why not be a part of his governance for the nation's development," Khali said.

In the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Arun Singh, Minister of State Jitendra Singh, and Lok Sabha MP Sunita Duggal, he joined the party. The wrestler said that he joined BJP as he was influenced by the party’s national policy.

Khali debuted in professional wrestling in the year 2000. Prior to joining the WWE, he worked as a police officer in Punjab.

In the WWE Universe, The Great Khali has fought professional wrestlers such as Batista, Shawn Michaels, and even John Cena and Kane. In the year 2021, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021. The 7-foot-1 wrestler has appeared in movies such as “MacGruber,” “Get Smart,” and “The Longest Yard.” He’s also started a wrestling school to help the next generation of Indian Superstar contenders get ready for the ring.

His induction into the BJP comes on the day of the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh. The party is gearing up for elections in four other states — Manipur, Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand — in February and March.

In 2020, Khali supported farmers protesting against the Centre’s farm rules near the Delhi border. The wrestler had urged Indians to stand with the protesting farmers.

The BJP is fielding candidates on 65 seats as part of a seat-sharing agreement with its partners, including former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).
